 How to Make Birria with Güero & Maria's Birria Spice Blend

Ingredients:

  • 2-3 pounds of meat (beef, goat, or lamb)

  • 1 package of Güero & Maria's Birria Spice Blend

  • 4 cups of water or broth

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

  • 1 large onion, chopped

  • 4 garlic cloves, minced

  • Salt to taste

  • Fresh cilantro, chopped (for garnish)

  • Lime wedges (for serving)

  • Corn tortillas (for serving)

  1. Prepare the Meat:

    • Cut the meat into large chunks.

    • In a large pot, heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil over medium heat.

    • Add the meat and sear until browned on all sides.

2. Cook the Birria:

  • Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the pot. Cook until softened.

  • Pour in 4 cups of water or broth and stir in Güero & Maria's Birria Spice Blend.

  • Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 2-3 hours, or until the meat is tender and falls apart easily.

3. Serve:

  1. Shred the meat with forks and return to the pot to mix with the broth.

  2. Serve the birria in bowls, garnished with fresh cilantro and lime wedges.

  3. Enjoy with warm corn tortillas.

Simple Corn Tortilla Recipe 

Ingredients:
- 2 cups masa harina (corn flour)
- 1.5 to 2 cups warm water
- 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions:

1. Mix Dough
   - Combine 2 cups masa harina and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
   - Gradually add 1.5 to 2 cups warm water until the dough feels like playdough.

2. Rest Dough
   - Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it sit for 30 minutes.

3. Shape Tortillas
   - Divide the dough into 12 balls.
   - Flatten each ball between plastic wrap using a tortilla press or rolling pin.

4. Cook Tortillas
   - Heat a skillet over medium-high heat.
   - Cook each tortilla for 30-60 seconds on each side until lightly browned.

5. Keep Warm
   - Stack cooked tortillas in a clean towel to keep them warm and soft.
